A Complicated Deal Goes Through on Deadline Day
The question of where 26-year-old midfielder Saul will be playing his football this season has rumbled on under the surface throughout the summer transfer window.
And now, with only hours remaining until the deadline, we have an answer. Transfer expert Romano has described Chelsea’s signing of the talented Spaniard as a ‘difficult deal’ for the Premier League side to complete, but Blues manager Thomas Tuchel has successfully made another high-class acquisition to his squad.
Despite the questions over his future, Saul played in all three of La Liga holders Atletico’s matches in the Spanish top-flight ahead of the international break before agreeing terms over a move to Stamford Bridge.
With official confirmation of the deal now imminent, Saul could be in line to make his Chelsea debut against Aston Villa on 11 September.
What Will Saul Offer Chelsea?
Chelsea boss Tuchel will be delighted to have the services of another formidable midfield option at his disposal over the course of the season as he seeks to put together a lasting title challenge and defend the Champions League.
The Blues’ midfield is already frighteningly good, containing the likes of World Cup winner N’Golo Kante and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year Jorginho. The hugely capable Mateo Kovacic is also an important component within this Chelsea team, and now Saul will be expected to cast his own influence over proceedings.
A versatile operator, Saul can play primarily in central or defensive midfield but has also been utilised in wide positions by Atleti manager Diego Simeone. He also offers an eye for goal, having netted over 50 career goals in club football.
