Liverpool Agree Sale of Xherdan Shaqiri to Lyon

Xherdan Shaqiri

According to Paul Joyce, Liverpool have agreed the sale of Xherdan Shaqiri to Ligue 1 side Lyon for £9.5 million after an initial bid of £4 million. The deal represents the completion of a good piece of business done by the Reds, who may now turn their attention towards further recruitment.

The sale comes as no surprise when considering the emergence of Harvey Elliott in the Liverpool squad. The 18-year-old made his full Premier League debut in the 2-0 win over Burnley, impressing many in the process. Fans have also drawn comparisons to the departing Shaqiri, with Elliott also possessing the eye-of-the-needle passing ability.

Could Transform Lyon

Having endured a poor start to the Ligue 1 season in the absence of Memphis Depay, who departed to Barcelona, Lyon will be delighted to welcome Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss international can fill the gaping hole of creativity left by Depay, and help the Frenchmen reach previous heights once again.

It could come down to just staying fit. During his time at Liverpool, whenever Shaqiri picked up some momentum, football’s Grim Reaper would come knocking, and another spell on the sidelines would occur. If he does stay fit, Lyon will have themselves a fantastic player at a bargain price.

As for Liverpool, having sold Shaqiri, they may look towards the transfer market, especially with one more non-homegrown space left to fill. The problem before was a lack of the aforementioned space. Now, however, with Shaqiri more or less out the door, the Reds can pursue one more summer signing.

At this moment in time, another arrival seems unlikely, but, as we’ve seen in the past, anything can happen towards the end of a summer. Sometimes, a signing can come out of nowhere. Liverpool fans will be hoping that’s the case.
