Tottenham Hotspur continue to negotiate a fee with Atalanta for Argentina defender Cristian Romero. However, the Italian sides’ £47 million asking price is proving prohibited for the North London club.

Tottenham are on the lookout for a new defender after the sale of Toby Alderweireld to Qatari side Al-Duhail, and the Premier League club have their eyes on 23-year-old Cristian Romero as a direct replacement. But according to a report in The Guardian, Atalanta are holding firm in their negotiations and request his £47 million buyout clause.
On the other hand, Spurs are unwilling to reach that asking price and continue to barter for a lower transfer fee to snap up the centre-back. In addition, Spurs feel the fee is unreasonable given that the player’s contract only has 12 months to run. Further evidence of this is through Transfermarkt, who value the international player at just under £30 million.
Cristian Romero at Atalanta
The Argentinian played 31 games last season in Serie A with two goals. He featured in seven matches in the Champions League, scoring once. He was a key component as the team from Bergamo finished in third place with 78 points. Therefore, this secured a berth in this upcoming season’s Champions League. His bright individual performance earned him the prize of being crowned as the best defender in the Italian league.
The defender’s excellent form propelled him to the Argentinian national team. His five caps this year, three of which came in the Copa America, earned him the Copa America title and cemented his place in the Copa America Team of the Tournament.
With over a month to go still of the summer transfer window, there is still enough time for a deal to ultimately go through.
