Watford Unlikely to Sign Lewis Ferguson

Lewis Ferguson

With Peter Etebo and Imran Louza arriving at Vicarage Road and Domingos Quina returning from loan, the Hornets’ midfield ranks have been bolstered ahead of their return to the Premier League. However, with the futures of Nathaniel Chalobah and Will Hughes uncertain (especially the latter) heading into the final year of their respective contracts, Watford may look to sign yet another midfielder. Lewis Ferguson was strongly linked earlier in the transfer window with a move, so is there any chance that he will be the Hornets’ next recruit?

Watford’s Lewis Ferguson Negotiations Continue to Stand Still

Watford’s Initial Lewis Ferguson Interest

As covered by Last Word on Sports, in May, Watford saw a bid worth in the region of £2 million rejected for Ferguson’s signature. The player even handed in a transfer request which Aberdeen promptly rejected too.

The Hornets kept tabs on him but shifted their focus elsewhere as well. With the Premier League season kicking off in fewer than three weeks, Ferguson’s name is still not a forgotten one, however.

Deal Unlikely as Talks Not Progressing Despite Interest

According to the Watford Observer, interest still remains in Ferguson. At the beginning of July, Aberdeen manager Stephen Glass claimed, “Our players will be in demand so it’s not a shock that people want to buy our players. But, the valuation has to be right for the club or they stay and play for us until that is met.”

He also said that  “his [Ferguson’s] commitment level is there and nobody should question it.”

Between his manager claiming Ferguson is committed to the team, Ferguson playing in the Club’s recent Conference League qualification match against BK Hacken, the Scottish top-flight season starting in less than a week, and his contract not running out until 2024, there is no reason to suspect Aberdeen will accept an offer for Ferguson unless the fee is too good to resist.

Considering Aberdeen may be looking for a sum over double what Watford initially offered, an agreement in this transfer window does not seem likely despite the prolonged interest. Perhaps future transfer windows will see a deal struck if Watford continue to keep tabs on his progress.

Besides, Watford already signed Louza and Etebo. Thus, they will likely be more inclined to find an out-and-out number six as opposed to a more advanced-minded midfielder such as Ferguson.
