Dortmund Get Their Man
The Dutch international arrives at Signal Iduna Park in the best form of his career. Malen scored 19 goals in Eredivisie last season, only finishing behind VVV Venlo’s Giakoumakis for the Willy van der Kuijlen trophy. The attacker scored a career-high 27 goals in the last season while also contributing ten assists.
Malen is not an exact replacement for Jadon Sancho. Unlike the Englishman, Malen is a striker. The Dutch international is more likely to score goals than act as a creator like Sancho. But he does possess the necessary abilities to be the creator if the situation demands.
The Dutchman is the type of player to take on defenders. He tends to drift towards the wings and uses his explosive speed to good effect. While leading the line, Malen takes up great attacking positions and at times makes runs to perfection and arrive late into the box.
Malen can play in any position across the attacking third and can replace Sancho on the left-wing while acting as a back-up in other positions. The 22-year-old will cause more problems working in tandem with Erling Haaland. The pair have all the complementary skills to become one of the best duos in the Bundesliga next season.
The transfer sums up Dortmund’s transfer genius once again. A star player left and, as per usual, a replacement was quickly found. Such is the Dortmund way, full expect Malen to flourish before becoming a start in a similar fashion to Sancho.
