Watford Eyeing Reinforcements But Will Not Make a Move for Morten Thorsby

Morten Thorsby

Watford have already bolstered their midfield ranks upon their Premier League return by signing Imran Louza and Peter Etebo. Domingos Quina also provides reinforcement as his loan move to Granada is over. Reports emerged the Hornets were interested in signing Sampdoria’s Morten Thorsby to further strengthen the midfield, though Watford’s sporting director suggests the club’s sights are set elsewhere.

Watford Looking at Targets as Attention Moves Away From Morten Thorsby

Reports Suggest a Bid Was Made

As covered by the Watford Observer, reports from Italy suggested Watford offered Sampdoria £5 million for the midfielder, slightly less than what the Italian club were looking for. The rumour gained traction and people expected the deal to be promptly wrapped up.

With Will Hughes yet to sign a new contract and potentially on his way out, seeing another midfielder arrive at Vicarage Road is a decent possibility. Thorsby would be a type of high-pressing, aerially-dominant midfielder Watford do not currently have on the books, making a move for the 25-year-old appear even more reasonable.

Watford’s Sporting Director Dampens Rumour

Sampdorianews.net reached out to Watford’s sporting director Cristiano Giaretta in regards to the rumored Thorsby swoop. He responded by saying: “We have almost completed the team. We are thinking of adding another player. We do not have Thorsby in our sights; there are no negotiations standing. We are looking for an element with different characteristics.”

Whether the ‘element with different characteristics’ Giaretta is referring to is a midfielder or another position remains to be seen. Giaretta might even be saying this to avoid starting a bidding war with other clubs for Thorsby’s signature. However, such an extravagant plan to divert attention away would not make the most sense.

If the other player Watford are looking at is also a midfielder, Lewis Ferguson fits the bill. He has many ‘different characteristics’ when compared to Thorsby, and Watford were interested in his signature earlier in the transfer window.
