Matías Viña

Roma have submitted a bid for the Uruguayan left-back Matías Viña, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. The Giallorossi have made an offer of €12.5 million including add-ons for the 23-year-old as they look for a replacement for the injured Leonardo Spinazzola.

Roma Looking to Replace Spinazzola

The Italian giants, AS Roma have been actively looking for a new left-back with their first choice Leonardo Spinazzola out for around six months. Jose Mourinho tried to get Alex Telles on loan from Manchester United but that deal looks highly unlikely to happen.

With that refusal, Roma have now turned to Matías Viña of Palmeiras as their search continues. The 23-year-old Uruguayan left-back has spent the past two seasons with Palmeiras in the Brazilian Serie A. In fact, he is a regular with the Uruguayan national team as well.

Negotiations Continue for Matías Viña

Palmeiras will eventually have to give 50% of any future sale to Viña’s previous club, Nacional de Montevideo. Hence, they are looking for a higher fee for him. However, the clubs should reach an agreement soon. Roma need a left-back quickly. Besides, the difference between their placed bid and Palmeiras’s asking price is reportedly only around €5 million. To further confirm the advanced stages of the deal, the player was benched for Palmeiras’s match against Atlético Clube Goianiense.

Similar Journey So Far to Cafu

Roma signed the legendary Marcos Cafu in 1997 from Palmeiras. If Viña turns out to be even half as good, Roma fans will be ecstatic. Viña made his debut in the first team of Nacional in April 2017.

In January 2020, he was sold to Palmeiras for a figure close to 5m. In Brazil, he won the 2020 Copa Libertadores with his side. From the stats, Viña seems like a solid left-back. However, his attacking stats are also not bad with ten goals and 16 assists in his career.
