Jadon Sancho Completes Manchester United Transfer

Jadon Sancho

England winger Jadon Sancho has completed his long-awaited transfer from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester United. The 21-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year contract, which includes the option of a further 12 months.

The two clubs agreed a £73 million fee during Euro 2020, but Sancho did not complete his medical with Manchester United until after England’s involvement in the tournament.

Jadon Sancho Officially Completes Transfer to Manchester United

Old Trafford Club Delighted With the Deal

Manchester United were desperate to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund last summer, but were unable to agree a transfer fee with the Bundesliga side despite months of protracted negotiations.

Dortmund were unwavering in their £108 million valuation of the player and refused to buckle under pressure from the Old Trafford giants to lower their asking price.

One year later, however, and Manchester United have officially secured their man. Both clubs will be pleased with the way the long-running transfer saga has concluded: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have paid significantly less to secure the services of one of Europe’s brightest young talents than they would have done a year ago. Dortmund, meanwhile, managed to keep hold of Sancho for another year, and the winger played a crucial role in the club qualifying for this season’s Champions League.

In his final campaign as a Dortmund player, Sancho overcame a slow start to the season to record an impressive 16 goals and 20 assists in 38 matches.

United boss Solskjaer was keen for the Red Devils to sign a right-sided attacking player this summer, and will start working with Sancho when the 21-year-old joins up for pre-season training, which is already underway.

Why Sancho Needs to Hit the Ground Running at Old Trafford

Following his involvement in England’s run to the final of Euro 2020, Sancho joins Manchester United after a very quick turnaround ahead of the new season.

The former Manchester City academy star knows he will need to make an immediate impact at his new club, especially given that United will start the season without another of their England internationals, Marcus Rashford.

Rashford is set to miss at least the first eight games of the 2021/22 season as he undergoes surgery on a long-standing shoulder injury. New signing Sancho will therefore fill in alongside the likes of Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani while Rashford recovers from the operation.

What Was Said?

Speaking to the club website, Jadon Sancho said: “I’ll always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first team football, although I always knew that I would return to England one day. The chance to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I just cannot wait to perform in the Premier League. This is a young and exciting squad and I know, together, we can develop into something special to bring the success that the fans deserve. I am looking forward to working with the Manager and his coaching team to further develop my game.”
