According to David Ornstein of the Athletic, William Saliba will complete a medical at Marseille before being unveiled at the club as the loan signing. It will be the French defender’s third loan move away from Arsenal since joining in 2019. The move once again creates questions over his long-term future at the Emirates. Considering his age, however, Arsenal would be stupid to let Saliba go on a permanent basis so early.
The Frenchman clearly has room to develop, that’s expected for a 20-year-old, but could he complete that development at Arsenal? When looking at their defensive options, it must be said that there is room for Saliba. Mikel Arteta has thrown young players in at the deep end before and many have quickly learned to swim, so why not Saliba? Give him chance and he may just impress.
Marseille Agree William Saliba Loan Deal
Chance to Prove Arteta Wrong
Instead of getting the aforementioned chance at Arsenal, Saliba will get that chance in Ligue 1 with Marseille. He will have the opportunity to prove Mikel Arteta wrong; to prove that he should have remained at Arsenal this season. The whole Saliba situation has left many Arsenal fans confused for a long time. When he was initially signed, many believed the Gunners secured a top young defender. Two years later and he is yet to gain a place in the first team.
Football is often about waiting for your moment, however, and best believe, Saliba will be waiting to pounce, preparing to make his move on loan at Marseille. He’ll come up against some of the best attackers in Ligue 1 and, as a result, should take his game to a new level.
Up against the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, in particular, Saliba can really test himself and learn from the opportunity away from Arsenal.
