Bakker Set for ‘Successful Future’

Speaking to the club website, Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes said: “Mitchel Bakker is a technically gifted and dynamic player on the wing whose profile fits in perfectly with Bayer 04.

“He is still young and capable of developing but he has already gained experience at the highest level at a top European club. Mitchel was an important player for PSG, particularly under coach Thomas Tuchel, and he will increase the quality of our squad. We are certain he is on the verge of a successful future.”

Bakker himself added: “The overall package from Leverkusen convinced me. The sporting management did a lot to get me and the conversations were very productive. The club is ambitious and so am I. That goes together.”

Career So Far

As with so many young Dutch players, Bakker started out in the famed youth academy at Ajax, making 37 appearances for their Jong Ajax team between 2017 and 2019.

However, he only managed to make two senior appearances, both in cup games. The first was in a 7-0 win against seventh-tier side Te Werve and the second against Go Ahead Eagles.

In 2019, he completed a move to PSG on a free transfer and made in debut in a Coupe de France match against Pau. His first Ligue 1 appearances came in a 4-4 draw against Amiens in February 2020.

Bakker has also featured in the Champions League, making his debut in the competition in a 2-1 loss against Manchester United in October 2020.
