Charlton Athletic are close to striking a deal for Preston North End striker Jayden Stockley, according to Richard Cawley of London News Online.
The highly sought-after frontman has caught the attention of a whole host of third-tier clubs, but it now seems that Charlton are set to win the race.
The 27-year-old spent the second half of the 2020/21 campaign with the Addicks and his impressive spell in SE7 has put Stockley very high up on Nigel Adkins’ priority list.
Charlton Athletic Set to Win the Race for Jayden Stockley
A Successful Loan Spell With the Addicks
A lack of game time for Stockley at Preston meant that Charlton secured his services in January. Emerging himself as a regular starter, the 27-year-old made 20 appearances in Charlton’s run-in, netting eight times in the process.
The Addicks certainly seemed to turn a corner in the concluding months of the League One season and the signing of Stockley helped the south London club put in a late play-off push. Charlton lost just a single game in 16 to end the campaign. A run that included five of the eventual top six.
Other Interested Parties
The expected availability of Stockley has excited a whole host of League One clubs. Within the early stages of this transfer window, it seemed that Stockley was edging closer to signing for Portsmouth. However, in what has been described as a ‘shock u-turn’, it seems that the forward could be joining Pompey’s promotion-chasing counterparts.
Ipswich Town and Sheffield Wednesday are also reportedly interested in Stockley. The Tractor Boys netted just 46 goals last season, suggesting that a forward who can consistently score at League One level is urgently needed.
The Owls have already seen Jordan Rhodes depart the club to remain in the Championship, whilst Josh Windass may also follow suit.
