Under the Radar Rose Helps Younger Players
Throughout his Spurs career, Danny Rose often made the papers and usually for talking freely about an issue at the club, or in football more generally.
But sensationalist headlines have not captured the role that Rose has had with the younger players in the Spurs squad.
Even after he was released just a few days ago, Rose was pictured speaking with Tottenham’s youth players- he had been training mostly with the under 23’s this season.
Samuel Cox, a Spurs academy coach, tweeted: “Dan has been nothing short of a role model for all of our young players, showing leadership, humility and a great attitude throughout.
“A top professional and a top human being who will be missed.”
Some academy players also took to Twitter to thank Rose, including 20-year-old Elliot Thorpe: “It’s sad that people will never know how much Danny did for all of us young players, the most professional and humble player I’ve ever met & a great guy I could go to for anything! Thank you Danny, you’ll be missed by all of us.”
Rose the Left-Sided Wingman
While many of the younger players will miss Rose for his advice and guidance, most Spurs fans will miss the brilliant performances he put in as a left-back.
Under Pochettino, Rose flourished and was a key player in bringing the club back to regularly competing for top four football.
Injuries unfortunately plagued much of Rose’s career. Eventually, his playing time was throttled especially under Mourinho, likely for political reasons within the club. In one episode of Amazon’s ‘All or Nothing’, Rose met with Mourinho to discuss his playing time where he did not hold back in suggesting that despite his own poor performances, other players were being picked week in week out regardless of their form.
Rose previously had spoken to the likes of The Sun about Spurs’ transfer policy, again giving comments few modern footballers would dare to make. But his honesty throughout his time at the club has helped to criticise the deeper machinations of the Spurs hierarchy.
Top Moments
One of the best moments in the North London Derby was Rose’s absolute screamer of a volley on his debut back in 2010.
On that famous night, the ball was punched away by Manuel Almunia, seemingly to safety far from his box. But Rose blasted the volley through Almunia for his debut goal in front of all the Spurs fans at home. What a moment.
Another important goal was when Rose followed up Nacer Chadli’s effort against Chelsea to give Spurs the advantage just before halftime. It was this historic 5-3 win on New Years Day that signalled a clear shift in the club’s trajectory to become serious London rivals.
Sadly, there was no big trophy moment for Rose, who ends his Spurs career with only medals; a runner up in a League Cup final and of course the Champions League final.
But between 2015-2017, Rose was in top form for Spurs, with regular England call ups and named in the PFA Team of the Year for two successive seasons.
Rose fell out with the club eventually, choosing to run down his contract. In the process, he has become a long-serving member of the club and is a player that Spurs fans will continue to talk about for his performances on the pitch and his down to earth, no-nonsense character off of it.
