Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady has been an important player for Lee Johnson since the head coach arrived on Wearside in December. The experienced winger had been unwanted by the previous manager, Phil Parkinson, but after several attempts to offload the former Republic of Ireland international, McGeady remained at the club.
Sunderland’s upturn in fortunes has been greatly helped by the Irishman’s form since being restored to the side, providing multiple assists for striker Charlie Wyke, as well as scoring several important goals himself.
However, following the defeat to Lincoln City in the first leg of the play-offs, it emerged that the winger may not feature in the second leg due to contractual issues. It has now come to light that he will be available for selection as the Black Cats look to come back from two goals down.
Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady Available for Play-Off Selection
Contract Stand-Off Reported
On Thursday, James Hunter of the Newcastle Chronicle reported that Sunderland and their veteran winger were involved in a contract stand-off. It was reported that should Mcgeady start one more game, he would be entitled to a one-year extension to his current deal that runs out this summer. The clause states that should McGeady play 30 games this season, including in the play-offs, then the clause would be activated.
Sunderland’s defeat at Lincoln on Wednesday means they are far from certain to be at Wembley, and another season in League One is a real possibility. With this being the case, the club was understood to be reluctant to sanction a new contract for their highest earner.
It was believed that the only way the Irishman would feature any further this season is for either the club to agree or the player to waiver the clause.
Lee Johnson Confirms McGeady Will be Available
Despite the reports from Thursday, Lee Johnson has given fans hope that the skilful winger will play a part in the second leg at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, Johnson said: “It’s all good with Aiden.
“Aiden has been available for me in terms of starting games and that is certainly the case tomorrow. It’s difficult for me to reveal contract situations, that’s not my place or fair on the player.
“All I can say is Aiden has been top drawer throughout my tenure and has proved his class. It shows he is a top human and a top player that he is available.”
Fans will undoubtedly be delighted that the main source of ammunition for striker Charlie Wyke will be available for selection. Sunderland trail 2-0 and have an uphill battle if they are to reach the final at Wembley.
