Frank Lampard is the ‘leading contender’ to replace Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace this summer, according to Matt Law and John Percy of Telegraph Sport.
Crystal Palace Want Frank Lampard to Replace Roy Hodgson
Roy Hodgson Unlikely to Continue at Palace
Lampard has been out of management since being sacked by Chelsea in January and is reportedly enjoying a break from management and spending time with family. The former Blues midfielder is uninterested in the England U21 role and wants to return to the Premier League.
Hodgson, who will be 74 years old before the beginning of next season, has yet to be offered a new contract by the club and looks set to join several players in a mass exodus from Selhurst Park this summer.
According to The Telegraph, the London club has also looked at options like Burnley manager Sean Dyche and out-of-work Eddie Howe, but Lampard is the club’s priority this summer.
Few Options for Lampard Make This the Right Move
Lampard looked unlikely to secure a gig at one of the bigger clubs in the Premier League after his sacking at Chelsea. His departure after 18 months at Stamford Bridge meant he has little success at the top end of the Premier League on his CV.
The huge improvement Chelsea have seen under his successor Thomas Tuchel has left Lampard in a less favourable light since.
The former England midfielder had been touted to take a Brendan Rodgers style route by taking over at Celtic to earn a better opportunity at a Premier League club. Seemingly, Lampard is uninterested and wants a Premier League return sooner rather than later.
With Palace set to clear several players from the squad, Lampard will likely be given heavy backing in the transfer window if he is to take over at Palace. He will be given an opportunity to showcase the style of football he couldn’t manage to at Chelsea.
That makes this a must-take opportunity for Lampard. He can build his reputation further South in London than he had originally planned to.
