Progress Rewarded
Mengi has been on loan at Championship side Derby County since January- playing under former United legend Wayne Rooney, making six appearances so far. In the Europa League, he made his United debut against LASK last season and his effort and attitude in training has been noted and now rewarded.
Hannibal Mejbri and Anthony Elanga have also recently committed their futures to the clubs- demonstrating that youth is once again becoming a key focus of Manchester United’s long term philosophy.
Youth was at the heart of Sir Alex Ferguson’s success at United and despite Alan Hansen claiming that ‘you can’t win anything with kids’ it was a philosophy that worked wonders for the Scot in the long term and current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hoping for similar success.
Debut Delighted Mengi
Mengi told the MUTV how his debut against LASK made him feel, saying: “It’s a great feeling. I’d like to thank everyone around me. My family, my teammates and everyone in the first-team made it very easy for me.
“The academy staff as well as the manager who gave me the opportunity. It’s just the start. It’s down to myself to keep kicking on but I’m very happy with it.”
Mengi will now look to get more game time under his belt for Rooney and Derby before heading into the summer hoping to impress and make his mark for Manchester United, where he’ll look to gain a consistent place among the first tem.
