Dayot Upamecano has reached a deal to join Bayern Munich. This has been reported by Fabrizio Romano and Christian Falk as it now appears he will indeed be staying in the Bundesliga. Additionally, Bayern Sporting Director Hasan Salihamidzic confirmed that Upamecano would be joining the club in the summer.
Salihamidzic just confirmed to Bild that Dayot Upamecano has reached an agreement with Bayern Münich on personal terms: “I can confirm, we’re very happy!” 🔴
The deal will be signed and completed in the coming months, when the release clause [€42.5m] will be paid to RB Leipzig.

A Long Term Deal
Romano has reported that the Upamecano will be signing a five year contract with Bayern. All that appears left for Bayern to do is pay the €42.5 release clause and the center back will be on his way to join the reigning European champions. Other clubs that were reported to have shown interest included Liverpool and Chelsea but no bids were reported to have been made by either club.
A Needed Player for Bayern
Bayern certainly needed to sign a center back in the summer transfer window as long time defender David Alaba has is reportedly to be on his way to a new club. Alaba has helped anchor Bayern’s backline in recent seasons and Upamecano will ensure the backline continues to feature high quality defenders.
Die Roten have not had their best season defensively during the 2020/21 campaign. They have conceded 26 goals so far this season in the Bundesliga which is the second most out of the current top five clubs in the league. Upamecano’s arrival may offer a solution to the number of goals Bayern have been conceding recently. He has gained plenty of experience at RB Leipzig playing in the German top flight and UEFA Champions League.
Upamecano could play alongside either Niklas Sule or Jerome Boateng next season. Sule and Boateng have shared playing time during the current campaign with both players receiving opportunities from Bayern manager Hansi Flick. Young talent Chris Richards, who is currently on loan at Hoffenheim, provides another option as well at center back. Overall, the acquisition of Upamecano ensures Bayern remains strong at the back.
