Celtic and Rangers Join the Race for Wigan Athletic Striker Kyle Joseph

Celtic and Rangers have both shown interest in Wigan Athletic forward Kyle Joseph, according to Football Insider. The 19-year-old – who has been capped by Scotland at U19 level – has emerged as one of England’s most sought-after players, despite the financial troubles that still loom over the Lancashire club.

Joseph’s current deal expires at the end of the season, with a whole host of clubs likely to try and secure a deal with the London-born forward.

Celtic and Rangers Have the Edge Over English Clubs

The Glasgow rivals do have an advantage over the English clubs in pursuit of the talented forward, with the cross-border transfer rules giving the pair a higher chance in striking deals with out of contract players under the age of 24. Premier League and Football League clubs are governed by rules, forcing higher transfer fees for such players, with these regulations relaxing for teams in Scotland.

Football Insider revealed that Championship club Barnsley saw a £500,000 bid rejected for the striker’s services last week, and it is expected that they will not be the only English side looking to acquire his signature.

Wigan Athletic Will Be Forced Into Selling the Young Star

After selling nearly all their first-team squad in summer, it is expected that Wigan will have to do the same with Joseph. The fact that he still has six months on his contract means that he could provide his side with much-needed cash.

Joseph only made his Wigan debut in October and has now scored five goals in 13 league appearances, including a hat-trick against Burton Albion in December.

He has certainly shown a lot of promise in a short time in the Latics’ first team and has gained invaluable experience as a teenager plying his trade in the Football League.
