Tough Time at Cardiff for Whyte

Gavin Whyte joined Cardiff in the summer of 2019 following a breakthrough season at Oxford United. The Northern Ireland international had only joined the U’s the season before from NIFL Premiership side Crusaders, but managed nine goals and seven assists in his first season in the Football League.

It was during his time at Oxford that he earned international recognition, and his since gone on to earn ten caps and score two goals.

As a result, the Bluebirds swooped in and prized the now 24-year-old away for a fee in the region of £2 million.

However, a change of manager and lack of game time has affected his form and has managed just one goal and one assist from 37 outings since his arrival in South Wales.

Hull City Reaction

Soaking to the clubs’ official website, Tigers boss Grant McCann said: “Gavin will bring pace, energy and directness. He likes to get the ball and run at people.

“He’s a full international and had a good time in Northern Ireland, a really good time at Oxford and followed that up with a move to Cardiff.

“We’ve been searching for a replacement for Hakeeb Adelakun and he will bring real pace and directness to the front three.

“We’re delighted to get him and there was a lot of competition for him. We’re delighted he’s chosen us and he’ll get the fans off their sofas because he’s direct and likes to get at people.”
