Rhys Norrington-Davies‘ time at Luton Town has come to an abrupt end as Sheffield United have recalled the young full-back. The 21-year-old made 22 appearances for The Hatters after immediately establishing himself as a regular starter.
Rhys Norrington-Davies Luton Town Spell Cut Short as Blades Recall 21-Year-Old
Decision That Came Out of Nowhere
It seemed that the young full-back was making steady progress with The Hatters since joining on a season-long loan in September, so the decision to recall the Welshman seemingly came from nowhere. Additionally, Blades boss Chris Wilder had previously assured Town fans that Norrington-Davies would be finishing his loan spell at Kenilworth Road.
Productive Spell at Luton Town for Rhys Norrington-Davies
It remains unforeseen why Sheffield United have recalled the Welsh international, but his loan spell with The Hatters has certainly been a productive one. Norrington-Davies has been heavily involved in the first half of the 2020/21 Championship campaign and it will have equipped him with much-needed experience if he is to break into Sheffield United’s team this season.
The full-back proved to be solid in defence but showed outstanding traits when going forward. Not only did he demonstrate his devastating pace in England’s second tier, but he also proved his quality from wide areas. The recently capped Welshman particularly thrived when operating as a wing-back, something that will benefit The Blades who tend to play five at the back, should Norrington-Davies break into the first team.
What Next for Norrington-Davies?
The abrupt nature of his recall suggests that the 21-year-old is part of Chris Wilder’s short-term plans, The Blades boss could look to Norrington-Davies as a last throw of the dice in seeking Premier League survival. Alternatively, the Yorkshire club have only one point to their name all season and remain 13 points off safety. Therefore, Wilder may be looking to build a squad during the second half of the season that will be prepared for the Championship next season.
There have also been a few rumours linking Norrington-Davies with a move to Stoke City. A perceived lateral move for the full-back, but with The Potters struggling in the full-back department, a move that might just happen.
