Stoke City have made Wales international Rabbi Matondo their first signing of the January transfer window. The 20-year-old joins the Potters on loan from Schalke.

Stoke City Sign Rabbi Matondo on Loan From Schalke

Matondo is a Wales International

Rabbi Matondo is a bright prospect. The winger started off at Cardiff City before joining Manchester City’s youth setup in 2016.

After spending three years with the Citizens, he left England to join Bundesliga outfit Schalke on a four-and-a-half-year deal worth £11 million.

During his time in Germany, Matondo has made 32 appearances for Schalke, scoring in an away win over RB Leipzig and a defeat at home to Wolfsburg.

However, the winger has managed just three appearances this season and has missed several games through injury. He leaves with Die Königsblauen sitting bottom of the Bundesliga and winless with just four points on the board from their opening 14 games.

Matondo was eligible to play international football for DR Congo, England or Wales. Despite representing England at U15 level, he switched allegiances to Wales and has since made seven senior caps, on top of the 15 he made at junior level.

Matondo on Stoke Move

Speaking to the clubs’ official website, Matondo said: “I’m delighted to sign for Stoke City until the end of the season and am looking forward to it.

“I’ve come here to help the lads in every possible way I can.

“As an attacking player, hopefully, I can add some goals and assists to try and help the team make the promotion spots.”

Stoke are currently in eighth place in the Championship, just three points off the playoffs. The Potters welcome Leicester City on Saturday in the third round of the FA Cup.
