Tottenham Hotspur have put contract talks with two of their star players on hold, according to the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick. Negotiations with Son Heung-min have been ongoing for months now, while reports of talks with Harry Kane over a new deal surfaced last night.
Given the financial pressure Spurs are operating with owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, though, these non-urgent talks are said to have been put to the side and will be re-addressed when finances are less of an issue.

Star Players Keen to Stay
There have been reports of talks with Son over a new deal since at least October, with Jose Mourinho stating then that he expected a resolution “sooner or later”. However, any new deal for the South Korean would take him into the top earners at the club, receiving around £200,000-a-week, which is high even without the current financial restrictions.
Talks with Kane are supposedly less advanced. The Independent’s Miguel Delaney says that the two parties have opened “initial dialogue” over a new contract at the club, but any agreement is still far off.
The striker has recently been linked with moves away from Spurs, including to Premier League rivals Manchester City, so Spurs opening up the possibility of a new deal with the England captain makes sense.
However, the pandemic is proving a difficult obstacle for Spurs, and when asked about Son’s new contract last month, Mourinho responded: “How can you sign a new contract with a player? You don’t know what is going to happen next season.
“You don’t know if you can offer the player a better contract than they have now. It’s a very strange moment. I just trust Sonny and Daniel Levy.”
Tying down both Son and Kane would be the ideal scenario for Spurs, but both are considered to be non-urgent at the moment. The pair signed five-year and six-year deals respectively back in 2018.
A more pressing issue would be the contract of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, which expires in 18 months. However, there have been no negotiations with the Frenchman amid links to Paris Saint-Germain, where he would reunite with Mauricio Pochettino.
