The defeat, against a Pep Guardiola side suffering from the effects of coronavirus, leaves pressure growing against Lampard.
Under Lampard’s guidance, the Blues splashed over £200 million on summer signings but have failed to make an impact in the Premier League.
Just one win in their last six leaves the London club eighth in the standings, level on points with Aston Villa, Southampton and West Ham.
Despite the mass spending a few months ago, the Blues sit three points worse off than last season.
Chelsea have already started looking for potential suitors according to The Athletic’s Simon Johnson and Liam Twomey.
Blues bosses are reportedly frustrated by the recent form under Lampard and the ineffectiveness of Kai Havertz and Timo Werner.
The duo moved to Chelsea with great expectations and have struggled to continue their form under Lampard.
Life for Werner in London started well but his form has since dropped. He has failed to score in any of his last 12 appearances for Chelsea – his worst scoring drought for more than six years.
Havertz, another of Chelsea’s marquee signings this summer, has meanwhile started the last four Premier League matches on the bench.
Lampard has not lost the dressing room, according to The Athletic, but tensions between some players and the Blues boss “have been growing for some time”.
Just one month ago the Blues were on a 17-match unbeaten run across all competitions, but Lampard’s side have undergone a sudden change in fortune.
