Manchester United Offer New Contract to Timothy Fosu-Mensah

Manchester United have offered a new contract to defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah, according to Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to value the young Dutchman as a depth option, and that will seemingly be reflected in a new contract being offered to Fosu-Mensah.

The 22-year-old is reportedly considering other options, though, with Marseille and Hertha Berlin reportedly interested.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah Offered New Manchester United Contract

Still Young

While many United fans will feel like they have known Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s name for some time, he is still only 22 years of age.

The defender made his senior debut in the 2015/16 season, with eight Premier League appearances that campaign. Fosu-Mensah’s emergence onto the first-team stage came largely due to the injury troubles in the Red Devils’ defence that season.

Since then, he has been on loan with Crystal Palace and Fulham, and has made occasional appearances for United.

This season, the 22-year-old has played just one league game, but Solskjaer has trusted him late on in important Champions League matches.

His role under the Norwegian manager seems to be clear. He will be in and around the squad, filling in for players across the defence and providing another option to help combat fatigue during fixture congestion.

A Versatile Option on the Backline

Another of the benefits of having Fosu-Mensah in the United team is his incredible versatility across the backline.

While he prefers to play as a right-back, the young Dutchman is also very capable of playing in the centre of defence, as well as a little higher up as a central defensive midfielder. He can also play as a left-back, although he has less experience there.

Ultimately, Timothy Fosu-Mensah could prove a fantastic player to have in the squad at Old Trafford, and the reported decision of Manchester United to offer Fosu-Mensah a new contract could turn out to be an intelligent one.
