Struggling Bundesliga side Schalke are currently bottom of the table, but the club have appointed Christian Gross as the clubs new head coach until the end of the season. The news was announced via the clubs’ official Twitter account on Sunday afternoon.
Christian Gross Announced as New Head Coach of Schalke
Schalke Look to Swiss Manager to Alter Fortunes
Schalke have only four points from their 13 Bundesliga games this season and are stuck right at the bottom of the league. Gross is a former manager of Tottenham Hotspur as well as VfB Stuttgart. As Spurs manager, he was best known for taking a tube train to the wrong station ending up closer to rivals Arsenal’s stadium than that of his new club Spurs at White Hart Lane.
Gross Wants ‘Goal Orientated’ Schalke
Christian Gross’ last job in management was in Saudi Arabia at Al Ahli in February, which was his second stint at the club having previously won the Saudi Crown Prince Cup and the Saudi Professional League in what was a successful period for the club. At his new club, also quoted on the clubs’ official Twitter feed, Gross is wanting to see a more attacking focused side.
“We have to be goal-oriented and work towards results. I want to feel the players’ enthusiasm at all times,” he said.
Gross Becomes Fourth Boss of Troubled Season
Gross is now the fourth boss of Schalke’s season despite it only being just 13 games old. Current interim boss Huub Stevens has been replaced by Gross after he had been appointed following the sacking of Manuel Baum. Baum had been brought in to replace the sacked former manager of Huddersfield Town, David Wagner, who was sacked in September.
Gross achieved his biggest successes in his home country of Switzerland, winning a total of six league titles with Basel and Grasshopper Zurich respectively.
Gross now starts this tough job with an away game at Hertha Berlin on January 2, 2021.
