Rotherham United Postpone Game Against Derby County After COVID-19 Outbreak

Rotherham United postpone game against Derby County today due to Covid-19 outbreak. The game will be rearranged in due course.

This afternoon’s Championship clash between Rotherham United and Derby County has been postponed. After a COVID-19 positive test to one of the Rotherham players and several others displaying symptoms, the club requested the postponement of today’s fixture at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.

EFL Statement After Rotherham United Postpone Game

Following the agreement to postpone today’s game, the EFL issued a statement: “This afternoon’s Sky Bet League Championship fixture between Rotherham United and Derby County has been postponed due to an outbreak of COVID-19, with players and first-team staff required to self-isolate in line with EFL and Government guidance.

“The Club has therefore informed the EFL it is unable to fulfil this afternoon’s fixture and the circumstances surrounding the postponement will now be the subject of an investigation in accordance with EFL Regulations.

“A revised date for the rearranged fixture will be confirmed in due course.”

One Player Tests Positive, Several Display Symptoms

As stated on the Rotherham website, one player has tested positive for COVID-19. Several others have also begun to display symptoms.

A club statement read: “Rotherham United can confirm that this afternoon’s Sky Bet Championship fixture against Derby County has been postponed following a positive test of Covid-19 for a member of Paul Warne’s squad, with further players within the first team bubble showing symptoms of the virus at present.”

The club have advised that no further comments will be made at this time. The game against Wayne Rooney’s Rams will now be rearranged. Rotherham’s game against Middlesbrough is now also under threat. The game at the Riverside Stadium is currently scheduled to be played on Boxing Day.

Other EFL Clubs Also Postpone Games.

In the past week, other Football League clubs have also been forced to cancel games due to COVID-19. Sunderland have postponed their next three games after one player tested positive and others displaying symptoms. The Black Cats fulfilled their last fixture against AFC Wimbledon with eight first-team players missing.

Peterborough United, like their League One rivals Sunderland, have also postponed their next three games. Fellow League One side Bristol Rovers announced that they will not play their next two games.
