Liverpool are reportedly hoping to start negotiations with Fabinho over a new contract, according to Fabrizio Romano of The Guardian. The defensive midfielder has slotted seamlessly into centre-back in recent weeks in the absence of Virgil van Dijk and was particularly impressive in Sunday night’s 4-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Liverpool Planning New Contract for Fabinho
Current Contract
Since signing from Monaco in 2018, Fabinho has gone on to become one of the ‘untouchables’ at the club. He was a key player in their run to the 2018/19 Champions League and the 2019/20 Premier League title and, with the Reds suffering from injury problems at the back, keeping Fabinho around for the long-term will be a smart piece of business.
The 27-year-old’s current deal runs until 2023. However, Liverpool want to extend this to either 2025 or 2026, which would also see an increase in his current £100,000-a-week wages. It is thought that the increase would take the Brazilian to just underneath the top earners at the club.
Another One Staying?
Another midfielder Liverpool are hoping to keep around is Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman, who scored the Reds’ second in that win against Wolves, sees his deal run out next summer.
The 30-year-old has been linked with a move to Barcelona, where he would reunite with his former Netherlands national team coach, Ronald Koeman.
Wijnaldum has been at the club since 2016 after he moved from Newcastle United following their relegation to the Championship. Liverpool are hoping to re-start talks with him over the next few weeks.
The midfielder is another player who has been key to Liverpool’s success in recent years. He scored twice in the historic 4-0 win over Barcelona last year, having only entered the game at half-time.
In their run to the title last season, he scored four times in 37 games, including in the 5-2 Merseyside Derby win over Everton.
