Tottenham Hotspur regained their place at the top of the Premier League table with a goalless draw against Chelsea on Sunday evening. Spurs replaced Liverpool at the summit following the Reds controversial 1-1 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion. Manchester City put five past Burnley without reply for the fourth time on the bounce at the Etihad in all competitions, while City’s neighbours Manchester United came from 2-0 down to beat Southampton in injury time.
Elsewhere there were impressive away victories for Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, beating Everton and Arsenal respectively, while West Bromwich Albion recorded their first three points of the season. The Baggies got the better of Sheffield United who props up the table and remain winless. Newcastle United won the Friday night battle, beating Crystal Palace thanks to two late goals.
On Monday evening, Fulham picked up a surprise win against Leicester City and West Ham United saw off Aston Villa.
Let’s take a look at who makes this week’s Premier League team of the week:
Premier League Team of the Week
GK: Illan Meslier (Leeds United)
It was a battle of the goalkeeper’s at Goodison Park, however, it’s Leeds United’s French shot-stopper who gets the nod this week. Illan Meslier made an array of saves in his sides 1-0 win over Everton, including a point-blank stop from Abdoulaye Doucoure in the first half.
RB: Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
Walker spent the majority of the game in the oppositions half and set up Riyad Mahrez’s second with quick thinking from a throw-in. Was solid throughout.
CB: Angelo Ogbonna (West Ham United)
Scored with a towering header to open the scoring and marshalled the defence well. Was fortunate at the death when Ollie Watkins was adjudged to be offside as it looked like the Italian might have fouled the Villa forward.
CB: Conor Coady (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
The skipper was brilliant in what was a new-look back four for Wolves. Commanding as ever as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side recorder their first away victory against Arsenal since 1979.
LB: Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City)
Much like Walker, the Frenchman didn’t have to do much defending but showed his value in the attacking third with a neatly taken volley just before half time.
RM: Riyad Mahrez (Manchester City)
The Algerian quadrupled his goal tally for the season with a sublime hat-trick against Burnley. He notched twice in the first half, typically cutting in on his left foot before burying a header in the second half to complete the rout.
CM: James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)
Is there a better set-piece taker in the Premier League right now? Ward-Prowse once again showed his quality from dead-ball situations despite being on the losing side. Jan Bednarek opened the scoring with a near-post header from Ward-Prowse’s pinpoint corner before the Saints skipper found the net with a scrumptious free-kick.
CM: Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City)
The Belgian was at his scintillating best in the 5-0 drubbing of Burnley. Teed up Mahrez’s opener and Mendy’s volley in the first half. Almost got on the score-sheet himself when his deep cross was parried over the bar by Clarets keeper, Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
LM: Pedro Neto (Wolverhampton Wanderers)
Put in a man of the match performance in Wolves’ impressive victory at the Emirates. The 20-year-old opened the scoring when he was quickest to react to Leander Dendoncker’s header that cannoned off the crossbar. Was also involved in what turned out to be the winning goal. His long-range effort was parried before Daniel Podence danced his way through to score.
ST: Edinson Cavani (Manchester United)
Started from the bench against Southampton, however, the Uruguayan took all the plaudits come full time. Cavani replaced Mason Greenwood at the interval and made his impact felt with 15 minutes, teeing up Bruno Fernandes to half the deficit. He then scored two headers late on, the latter in injury time which turned out to be the winner.
ST: Callum Wilson (Newcastle United)
With the game edging towards a goalless draw, Newcastle shot into life in the final minutes to win 2-0. Wilson netted the first with a well-taken finish before teeing up Joelinton to double the lead in the dying embers.
