Following the injury of Jack O’Connell at the start of the season, Sheffield United have struggled for form, and look increasingly likely of facing the drop. In truth, January can’t come soon enough for Chris Wilder, who has failed to replace O’Connel’s impact with his current resources. To potentially solve that problem, according to The Athletic, The Blades are set to target out of favour Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo in the January transfer window on a loan deal.
Sheffield United to Target Rojo
Worrying Start to the Season
Last season, Sheffield United were in dreamland having secured a ninth-place finish. This campaign, however, the bubble has well and truly been burst; second season syndrome has kicked in, and that dream is slowly turning into a nightmare.
The Blades currently sit rock bottom, winless, and on one point. And, although the season is yet to reach the halfway point, as each disappointing result arrives, the worry of relegation will increase.
Nobody could have predicted the Blades’ current predicament, and the impact O’Connell’s injury would have. And that’s why January is so important. Chris Wilder must find a solution to solidify the backline.
Though, it has to be said that the problems haven’t occurred defensively. It has been at the other end of the pitch where United’s problems have been prominent.
It has been their lack of attacking threat, resulting in a shortage of goals, which has cost them the all-important points so far this season. Despite signing Rhian Brewster for a whopping £20 million, their problems in front of goal have worryingly remained.
Whilst finding an O’Connell replacement in January is important, perhaps the focus should be on finding a goalscorer. In truth, if they fail to solve their lack of goals, the drop will become an all too real reality for Sheffield United in just their second season back in the Premier League.
