A total of eight positive COVID-19 tests have been found in the latest round of testing, the Premier League has confirmed. The testing, which took place between Monday, October 12 and Sunday, October 18 resulted in the eight cases following a total of 1,575 players and coaches being tested.
The new number of eight cases is worryingly increased from the previous round of testing, which took place between October 5 and October 11. Last time out, the number of cases reached five and looked to be decreasing. Following the international break, however, the positive tests have perhaps predictably risen.
Eight Positive COVID-19 Cases in Latest Premier League Testing
Worrying for the Premier League
The international break was always going to see a rise in cases within the footballing world. It threw players outside of their club bubbles, onto a plane and into contact with a fresh batch of teammates. In most cases, it placed players from a variety of the European Leagues into direct contact.
So much so that the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo received a positive test within the Portugal ranks. Now, with the Premier League cases on the rise, the question rises again of how football will continue to limit the spread of COVID-19, especially with the Champions League’s return upon us.
Jordan Ayew Positive Test Confirmed
So far, the only player to have confirmed a positive test is Crystal Palace’s Jordan Ayew. The news, which broke on Sunday, left the forwards out of contention for a place in Palace’s game against Brighton & Hove Albion and will likely see him miss the game against Fulham at Craven Cottage next Sunday.
The news would have frustrated Roy Hodgson, who was left without one of his main goalscoring threats as Crystal Palace squandered their lead at the death to draw with Brighton.
