It seems that Chelsea and Frank Lampard are not satisfied with their transfer market splurge during last summers window. This summer, they will be going for another marquee signing: Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland, according to The Athletic.
Chelsea Planning to Sign Erling Haaland Summer
Absolute Goal Machine
Haaland is a goalscorer – plain and simple. In his entire career so far, he has knocked in goals consistently, and he’s only 20-years-old. Sometimes it’s hard to believe he’s only 20 because of how seasoned he looks on the pitch.
The Norwegian is tall, strong, lightning-fast, a clinical finisher, and just has that poachers instinct that has made so many top strikers, like Luis Suarez and Robert Lewandowski. He’s also unfazed by any pressure, and always seems to deliver when it counts.
For example, in his first-ever Champions League match with RB Salzburg at 19, he scored a hat-trick. He also went on to score eight goals in the group stage, nearly leading his team through a group that had both Liverpool and Napoli in it.
When he moved to Dortmund that following January, he bagged a brace against European powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain in his first knockout match, before losing the second leg. After their win, some of the PSG players proceeded to mock Haaland’s goal celebration. A 19-year-old had successfully got in the heads of international superstars like Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
His future is so incredibly bright, and if Chelsea do end up signing him, they could have a future Ballon d’Or winner on their hands.
Would His Potential Arrival Cause a Potential Exit?
Haaland is a generational talent, so if the Blues do have the opportunity to sign him, by all means, they should take it. However, there are players currently at the club that could suffer if he signs.
None more so than Tammy Abraham. The young Englishman is currently behind Timo Werner in the pecking order, but he makes regular appearances for the club. He did lose his spot to Olivier Giroud at the end of last season, and the Frenchman has been involved more than expected this year.
The arrival of a player like Haaland, who would undoubtedly be a regular starter, would push Abraham even further down. Maybe Lampard could have Werner and Haaland playing together, but Abraham for sure wouldn’t start.
He’d have a rotation role, maybe a few cup appearances, similar to the role Giroud has at the moment. But the Frenchman is 34-years-old, at the tail end of his career, while Abraham’s has just begun. He certainly wouldn’t want to spend his entire career in the shadow of two superstar strikers.
However, with all that said, most Chelsea fans would see signing Haaland as a risk definitely worth taking. Abraham potentially leaving doesn’t compare to the idea of having a player like him in their team.
It is obviously early days, but if Haaland does move to Stamford Bridge, it would be a massive coup for Lampard and his side.
