Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood to Be Dropped From England Squad
Southgate Loses Trust in the Youngsters
Both players were sent home after breaking COVID-19 bio-secure protocols by inviting two women back to the team hotel.
At the time, Gareth Southgate said that he would have to take some time before considering what to do next. It seems like the England manager has made up his mind as both are set to miss out on call-ups.
Who Will Replace Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood?
With both players set to miss out, the next question will be who will be likely to replace them. If Southgate wants to pick players like-to-like, then replacing Foden with Jack Grealish, who replaced an injured Marcus Rashford in the last squad, could be what Southgate decides to go for.
With Rashford likely to return to the squad, Grealish loses his place in the squad if Southgate decides to pick a squad of 23. However, Foden’s omission could be a lifeline for the Aston Villa midfielder, with Grealish one of a number of players who could replace the Manchester City youngster.
Other players who could be in line for a recall are Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Aston Villa’s new loan signing Ross Barkley. However, both these players are probably less likely to get a call-up due to their lack of game time.
Greenwood’s omission could see the first call-up for Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The England U21 international has been in superb form since the start of the season. He is the top scorer in the Premier League and has scored 13 in 23 under Carlo Ancelotti.
Harry Maguire to Also Return
Harry Maguire is also set for a recall to the squad after being dropped last time out due to being found guilty of assault and attempted bribery in Greece. However, after a successful appeal, his convictions were nullified with the player now waiting for a retrial.
