Atalanta have signed Russian attacking midfielder Aleksey Miranchuk, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Serie A club will acquire Miranchuk from Lokomotiv Moscow for a fee of €14.5 million.
Atalanta to Sign Aleksey Miranchuk
Who Is the New Signing?
Atalanta’s new signing will be joining the Italian club from Lokomotiv Moscow. Miranchuk has played his entire professional career with the Russian club and has made over 200 appearances for their first team.
As of late, Miranchuk has been one of the best players in the Russian Premier League. During the 2019-20 season, he scored 12 goals and registered five assists in 27 appearances. His good form has continued into the start of the current season where he has recorded two goals and one assist in four appearances.
On the international level Miranchuk has made 25 appearances for Russia. He made an appearance at the 2018 World Cup and was heavily involved in the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign. To date, Miranchuk has five goals and one assist for the Russian national team.
Depth Added to Atalanta’s Attack
Miranchuk is going to be adding further depth to Atalanta’s already highly-talented attacking unit. They were by far one of the most dangerous attacking sides in Serie A last season. Atalanta scored an incredible 98 goals during their 38 match season.
This signing will provide Atalanta an effective player who can play in different positions. The Russian international is primarily an attacking midfielder. However, according to Transfermarkt, he has also played on the wings and as a striker. As a result, Miranchuk has the ability to be a key substitute for them that can feature in multiple positions.
A Signing for the Future
Atalanta will now have two talented attacking midfielders in their squad following Miranchuk’s addition. Last summer they acquired Ruslan Malinovskyi who has proven to be very effective for the club.
Veteran players Papu Gomez and Josip Iličić are both 32 and their contracts will come to an end at the conclusion of the 2021/22 season. It remains to be seen if they will remain for the duration of their contracts but Atalanta will now have two players who can fill the void left by either player if they were to depart after next season.
This could be a great acquisition in the long-term for Atalanta as they look to remain competitive in Europe. Miranchuk is joining after his best season-to-date for Lokomotiv Moscow and appears to be a player capable of making an impact during his time in Serie A.
