After playing a starring role in Leicester City’s top-six finish, Ben Chilwell has unsurprisingly attracted interest from Chelsea. Frank Lampard will be keen to strengthen his often vulnerable left-back position before the new season begins.
According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, the man to put an end to that Chelsea vulnerability will be Chilwell. Ornstein stated that a deal is close to being agreed with a fee of £50 million reported.
Chilwell Close to £50 Million Chelsea Move
Injury Concern Already?
As previously mentioned, Lampard will want to strengthen the left-back area before the start of the season. The Chelsea boss will be forced to wait to see his potential new man in action, however, with Chilwell recovering from a heel injury which will likely rule him out for the start of the season.
For now, to the disappointment of the fans, should Chilwell swap Leicester for West London, he will have to find a place in the Stamford Bridge stands as he recovers from injury.
Ashley Cole’s Replacement?
Despite leaving Chelsea all the way back in 2006, Ashley Cole is yet to see someone take the baton of star left-back at Stamford Bridge. Marcos Alonso tried, and under Conte succeeded, but has since become a burden to the Chelsea back four. Emerson, too, attempted to fit the shoes of a capable left-back, but, again, inevitably failed to impress defensively.
So, in the latest attempt to finally solve Chelsea’s left-back problem, Ben Chilwell looks likely to arrive and become the newest contender to make his name in West London. His attacking talents are often heralded; defensive ability, though sometimes exposed, are seen as better than Chelsea currently have to offer.
Should a deal be completed, Chelsea will have themselves a talented young defender, made for both the present and the future. For £50 million in today’s market, too, they have themselves a modern-day bargain compared to Harry Maguire’s price last year.
