Top Five 2019/20 Transfers for AC Milan

It was an unusual season for AC Milan. Their early play forced them to miss out on Champions League football once again next season. But, their play during football’s restart had them looking like one of the top teams in Europe. Milan were beating opponents with relative ease, including the likes of Juventus and Lazio. Although their goals were not met, there is optimism for next season, with a lot of that coming from their 2019-20 transfers.

Top Five Transfers for AC Milan From 2019/20 Season

AC Milan Number 5 and 4

The fifth most important of the 2019/20 AC Milan transfers was the acquisition of Simon Kjaer. The Dane is a force and a rock in the back. Milan were struggling to find the right partner in the defence alongside captain Alessio Romagnoli, and Kjaer solved this issue.

He’s nearly impossible to beat in the air or dribble around. Clearly those around vital aspects for a centre-back. What sets Kjaer apart, however, is his toughness and tenacity. He doesn’t shy away from any challenge and is willing to throw his body on the line if it means a defensive stop. Kjaer has given Milan an extra year or two to find another starting centre-back.

The fourth most important transfer during that time is Ante Rebic. He became Milan’s most lethal goal scorer in the second half of the season. Primarily playing as a winger, Rebic has the versatility to also play behind the striker or as the main striker should it be necessary. His goal scoring isn’t one-dimensional either – he can strike from distance, dribble around defenders, and position himself well to finish off the ball. Like Kjaer, Rebic brings in a toughness that was sorely needed in Milan. Expect another season next year with double-digit goals for the Croatian.

Top 3 Trwansfers

The third best transfer was bringing in Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Swede was already a cult legend at the club due to his time there a decade ago, but returned as he wanted to help the struggling side.

Milan’s play completely transformed with the introduction of Ibrahimovic. His statistics were great, but not otherworldly with ten goals and five assists in 18 league matches. The most important trait he brought in, however, was his leadership. Players were held accountable, and it seemed as if they wanted to win for Ibrahimovic. A perennial winner like him was necessary to revitalize the club.

The second most important transfer was the arrival of Theo Hernandez. Milan had struggled at the left-back position for more than a decade since Paolo Maldini hung up his boots. Hernandez is no Maldini, of course, but he’s an upper-tier and growing left-back who will be a long-term starter. Hernandez’s electric flair and a knack for goal-scoring set him apart from others in the position, although he does have some tuning to do in his defensive play.

The best out of all 2019-20 transfers was purchasing Ismael Bennacer. The Algerian has already emerged as one of the top midfielders in all of Italy. Rating his play must be through an eye-test over a statistical sheet, however. He doesn’t score many goals or provides many assists, but he has the talent to completely dictate a game. Everything Milan does flows through Bennacer, and he will only get better. At just 22-years-old, Bennacer is one of the most important building blocks for the Rossoneri.
