League One side Oxford United have completed the permanent signing of Matty Taylor from Bristol City. The 30-year-old spent the 2019/20 season on loan with the U’s after failing to settle in the Championship and went on to hit 13 league goals in 26 appearances.
Matty Taylor Completes Permanent Move to Oxford United
Taylor Returns
This becomes Taylor’s third spell with the club having started his career with Oxford back in 2007. However, he only played seven times back then before dropping down into non-league with North Leigh and Didcot Town.
He then moved to Forest Green Rovers before linking up with Bristol Rovers, where his career really took off. In two-and-a-half seasons at the Memorial Stadium, Taylor scored 61 times in 118 games before completing a controversial cross-city switch to Bristol City.
Despite featuring 67 times in the league for the Robins, Taylor struggled to find the net. He scored just seven times for City before finding himself on loan at Oxford.
His form last season helped Karl Robinson’s side to reach the League One play-off final after overcoming Portsmouth in the semi-finals. However, Oxford were defeated at a sparsely-populated Wembley by Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe Wanderers.
Taylor Delighted to Return
Speaking to the club website about returning to his hometown team, Taylor said: “I couldn’t be happier. It’s my local club, the players and staff here are fantastic and the fans have been amazing. It’s a big move for me but I know it’s the right one and I can’t wait to get started again. What happened in the play-offs hurt us but we have to use that as fuel and motivation to go even better next time.”
U’s manager Robinson added: “In a normal season he’s a 20 goal striker and every team is looking for that. I want to thank the board for backing us and Matty for buying into what we are dong here.”
