As the Premier League restarts, both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are focused on securing a top-four place. United currently sit fifth on 45 points whilst Spurs are eighth, four points further back.
Results Before Lockdown Were Poor
The enforced break from action can help Tottenham. Results prior to lockdown were unsatisfactory – knocked out of the FA Cup on penalties by Norwich City, a lacklustre draw away at Burnley in the league and Spurs’ final game was a 3-0 defeat away to RB Leipzig in the Champions League.
Injuries have hampered boss Jose Mourinho this season. Harry Kane, Son Heung-min, Steven Bergwijn, Moussa Sissoko and others have all been out injured. This has left a depleted squad to choose from. The first three are now ready for action with Spurs looking to have a strong finish to the season.
Tottenham Hotspur’s Season in the Balance
Even the most optimistic Tottenham Hotspur fan will know that a top-four finish is all they can really hope for to save their season of turmoil. Just over a year ago, the North London club competed in the Champions League final. It was supposedly a seminal moment to show that Spurs were ready to challenge for top honours.
A lacklustre transfer window and the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino was followed by the arrival of the newly dubbed ‘humble one’, Jose Mourinho. A good start was rocked by injuries and now Spurs must hit the restart running.
Tottenham cannot afford to drop points and need to start with three points against a Manchester United team that were showing signs of resurgence prior to lockdown.
