There have been nine positive tests for coronavirus in the Championship, as per the latest round of testing (via EFL official statement).

Nine Positive Tests for Coronavirus in the Championship

1094 players and club staff were tested from the Championship. There were also tests for four League Two clubs.

The cases of coronavirus are from six different Championship sides. Sheffield Wednesday have announced that one of their staff is “asymptomatic” and “self-isolating in line with government and EFL guidance.”

Another club with a case is Preston North End, which involves one of their staff members. Sky Sports report that this is “despite that person returning a negative swab during the first batch of tests.” This is after Jayden Stockley tested positive for the virus last weekend.

How Will This Impact on Restart?

Currently, the Championship is the only league to follow after the Premier League in making preparations to restart. League One and League Two are yet to decide on how to end the season.

These positive tests add to the growing number of overall positive cases across football in England. Tottenham Hotspur confirmed one positive test in their ranks today.

At the end of last week, there were other positive tests confirmed at Fulham.

Each week, these numbers remain relatively low. Nevertheless, no teams are yet to face each other in competition on the pitch.

For now, it is clear that all clubs are closely monitoring their personnel, isolating when there is a positive case and doing what they can to implement strategies to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus.

The EFL affirm that they will “continue to make regular and relevant announcements as appropriate in respect of the testing programme to support competition integrity and transparency.

No specific details as to Clubs or individuals will be provided by the League.” Indeed, the clubs and individuals will choose to divulge this information.
