Mario Gotze has had two separate stints at Signal Iduna Park with Borussia Dortmund, but he is set to depart this summer.
Mario Gotze Will Leave Dortmund This Summer At The End Of His Contract
The midfielder will leave the club on a free transfer this summer after his contract expires, the Bundesliga club has confirmed.
The 2014 World Cup winner rejoined Dortmund in 2016 from rivals Bayern Munich for £20 million.
Borussia Dortmund Return
His first season back in Dortmund saw him make 16 appearances as he struggled for fitness.
In the next three seasons, the midfielder made 86 appearances across all competitions but, ultimately hasn’t been in the plans of Lucian Favre.
Michael Zorc, Dortmund’s Sporting Director’s Statement
“We will part ways with Mario Gotze this summer,” the Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc told Sky Germany.
“It was a mutual and respectful decision. Mario is a great man.”
Lucian Favre’s Statement
“Right now, we are playing 3-4-3,” Favre told the media before Saturday’s Bundesliga match with Wolfsburg.
“So, I have been talking to Mario, and unfortunately this is not the right system for him. You must say the truth about this.”
2014 World Cup for Gotze
The midfielder featured in five games out of the six in the 2014 World Cup.
The first game was against Portugal in Group G with Germany cruising to a 4-0 win and with Gotze getting an assist.
Game number two saw the midfielder deployed as a winger against Ghana with the game finishing 2-2 and Gotze getting on the scoresheet.
Moving onto the third group game and Germany would win that one 1-0 against the USA with Gotze playing 14 minutes in the game.
Onto the knockout stages and Germany would beat Algeria 2-1 after extra-time in the Round of 16.
They would then knockout France beating them 1-0 in the Quarter-Finals and they would humiliate Brazil 7-1 with Gotze not featuring in that game.
This set up a final against Argentina with the game going all the way into extra-time.
Gotze came on just before the end of the second-half and scored the winner for Germany in the dieing embers of extra-time.
