The historic 2015/16 Premier League campaign introduced Jamie Vardy to the nation. He spearheaded Leicester City to the Premier League title with 24 goals in the competition. The now 33-year-old is still one of the most deadly strikers in the league and currently has 19 goals – the most in the division.
Considering his playstyle is based around his explosive pace; it is surprising that the striker is still operating at such a high level.
How Jamie Vardy Is the Premier League Top Goalscorer at 33-Years-Old
Clinical Nature
Being clinical is one of Vardy’s main assets as a striker. The Leicester City man boasts a conversion rate of 27.78%.
While he is dangerous on the counter-attack when running at defences – Vardy is also a fox in the box. In fact, he has only scored once this campaign from outside of the area, against Bournemouth.
Although he is 33-years-old, his movement is still great and Vardy is getting into great goalscoring positions, shown by his overall xG of 14.24 this season.
it is no doubt that Vardy’s pace and power are important in his playstyle. However, being able to find spaces to run into inside the area has also made him a clinical striker in the past seasons.
Still Explosive
The main aspect of Vardy’s game which has allowed him to flourish at the top level has been his explosive pace. He still has this in abundance.
The striker announced he was going to ‘step down’ from international football in August 2018. This allowed the striker to get proper rest that many other Premier League players won’t be getting.
This is partly reasoning for Vardy still having his explosive pace at 33-years-old.
It is pivotal in his game and allows him to get an extra yard on defenders. Vardy then punishes them with his clinical finishing.
Here is a prime example of Vardy’s pace from his first goal against Newcastle United in September 2019. He sees the space in behind the defensive line and sprints into it. The pass from Harvey Barnes is played and Vardy can beat the defender to the ball and score from a tight angle.
This type of run has been typical of Vardy in the Premier League since he joined. It shows that the striker still has the explosive nature which has helped him to 19 goals so far this season.
Conclusion
The main factors that have allowed Jamie Vardy to flourish this season are the same ones that have helped him to get 99 Premier League goals in his career.
He is one of the best strikers in recent years in the Premier League and his place in the ‘100 club’ is waiting for him.
While he might be 33-years-old, Jamie Vardy is perhaps playing some of the best football in his career this season with Leicester City, who are currently third in the Premier League.
