Real Madrid will sell or release high-profile players this summer according to Mario Cortegana from Spanish news provider AS.
The hierarchy at the club, including manager Zinedine Zidane, must free up funds in order to have a chance at securing their summer transfer targets.
Real Madrid Ready to Axe Key Players
High-Profile Departures
Forwards Gareth Bale and James Rodríguez will be among the biggest names to leave Madrid this summer.
Bale’s long term feud with Zidane continued this season and it seems Zidane is willing to cut his losses with the Welshman this summer.
Colombian forward Rodriguez has struggled for consistency at Madrid since his 2014 transfer from AS Monaco. He has only made 11 appearances for the club this season.
Further players looking set to leave Madrid include Lucas Vázquez, Mariano Díaz, Álvaro Odriozola and Nacho Fernández.
Financial Balancing Act
Selling the likes of Bale, Rodríguez, Vázquez, Díaz, Odriozola and Fernández would reportedly bring in €121 million in transfer fees for Madrid. Such sales would also free up an estimated €75 million in player wages.
Madrid look to strike a financial balancing act between selling and buying players this summer. The club want to overhaul areas of their first-team in preparation for next season.
Allowing these players to leave frees squad places for incoming signings. It also ensures the club stay within La Liga’s maximum salary allowance for each club.
Who Could Replace Axed Players?
Madrid are chasing a range of top players across Europe. It appears that defence and midfield are Zidane’s top priority for the next campaign.
Chelsea stalwart N’Golo Kante and Rennes’ teenager Eduardo Camavinga seem to be a target to provide competition for Casimero.
Impressive RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano is linked with the club and is reportedly a top target for Zidane.
