Turbulent Career so Far

While Angel Gomes’ career has been short, with the player still only 19 years of age, it has been rather eventful.

As a 16-year-old, he became one of the youngest players to play for the Red Devils when he debuted as a late substitute in a victory over Crystal Palace at the end of the 2016/17 season. He looked to have bags of potential, and got fans extremely excited.

A slight blip in the quality came when he signed his first professional contract at Old Trafford. Although they eventually came to an agreement, the club gave a significantly lower offer than what Gomes’ representatives were after. In the end, they settled on a staggering £17,000 per week. For a youngster who had played just two minutes of senior football, that was astonishing. He has not proven that he is worth it as of yet.

Although he made his debut for the first-team nearly three years ago, the 19-year-old has just ten appearances for United. The attacking midfielder has not managed a goal or assist either, and may leave in the summer, with a contract running out and no agreement having been reached.

Manchester United Hopeful of Coming to an Agreement over a Gomes Contract

Tahith Chong, who had also been struggling for game-time earlier in the season, recently signed a new contract, with his previous one set to run out at this season’s conclusion. Since committing his foreseeable future to the Red Devils, though, he has seen a boost in appearances. Gomes could have the same if he agrees on a deal.

The most recent development, in this case, came with United offering the Englishman a new deal in the region of £30,000 a week, including bonuses. This would be difficult for him to turn down, and with much uncertainty over contracts set to run out in the summer, United are hopeful that Gomes will sign a new deal with them.
