Dillon Hoogewerf Signs First Professional Deal With Manchester United
Who is Dillon Hoogewerf?
Manchester United’s academy has produced some great talents over the years, with the likes of Mason Greenwood and Brandon Williams having broken into the first-team this season, and Dillon Hoogewerf looks likely to follow them.
The 17-year-old is first-choice striker for United’s U18’s and his performances there have earned him some appearances in United’s U23s. The Dutch attacker joined from Ajax last summer and has been great for United’s youth sides.
His signing of a professional contract could be the first in a series of events eventually getting him a shot at the first-team, like so many others under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and His Faith in Youth
This season, United manager Solskjaer has shown his trust in youth. On the opening day of the Premier League season, United had the youngest side in the league. This set a precedent for what was to come.
Solskjaer has shown a tremendous amount of belief in United’s young players, especially Greenwood and Williams.
Greenwood has 22 appearances in the Premier League this season but has shown his quality in Europe. The striker has seven direct goal involvements, one every 65 minutes, in the Europa League this campaign. Solskjaer has been fully rewarded for his trusting in Greenwood, and looks to have a star of the future on his hands.
It has been a similar story with Williams. The left-back came in to replace an injured Luke Shaw and was an instant success. Despite being just 19 years of age, Solskjaer put his full faith in the Englishman to fill the gap left by the underperforming Shaw, and Williams did more than satisfy his needs. He has shown that he will be a great player for United over the coming decade, once again Solskjaer’s giving youth a chance paying off.
Hoogewerf could follow in their footsteps. However, with so many fantastic young players there, he will face stiff competition.
