Gianluigi Donnarumma is on the cusp of being one of Europe’s elite goalkeepers. He’s played the savior role for AC Milan time and time again, but the Rossoneri have yet to make the Champions League during his tenure. This is no fault of his own, but the Italian shot-stopper is not only a Champions League quality player but deserves to be there. Should he secure a move away from Milan, here are his best potential fits.
Where Next For Gianluigi Donnarumma?
Paris Saint-Germain
Donnarumma has long been rumoured as a target for PSG. Firstly, for obvious reasons, PSG has the finances to acquire his services. A rising 21-year-old star will command a high transfer fee. In addition, agent Mino Raiola will make sure his client gets a hefty contract.
Les Parisienshave dominated Ligue 1 this decade. Their team as a whole is good enough to win the league year in and year out without elite goalkeeping. They can not, however, seem to find the success they desire in the Champions League. This is where they need a star in the back to stop opposing strikers.
PSG are not in dire need of a goalkeeper, but if a star is available, then the move must be considered. Keylor Navas is a solid No.1 but is aging. Sergio Rico is a back-up at the Champions League level and Marcin Bulka is a promising prospect, but nowhere near Donnarumma’s level just yet.
With Leonardo Araújo back as PSG’s sporting director, don’t be surprised if they ring for Donnarumma once again.
Manchester United
David De Gea will go down as a fantastic goalkeeper. He has, however, proven to become more and more error-prone recently. For a club of Manchester United‘s stature, they can no longer accept dwindling in mediocrity. With Manchester City‘s Champions League ban, United has a real chance to qualify this season. It may be time to go all in.
The Red Devils secured a massive acquisition in Bruno Fernandes in January and they will most certainly look to continue to bolster their squad. De Gea is a huge name in the wage books, so it might be time to sell and invest in other pieces. Donnarumma can become the team’s goalkeeper for the next decade and will not immediately demand the former’s wages. With this, United can then save more money to add to other positions.
Juventus
Wojciech Szczęsny has surpassed all expectations placed on him when he first joined Juventus. The team would have no worries employing the Polish international as their starter for another couple of seasons.
If the chance is there, however, Juventus could jump at the opportunity of securing Donnarumma. They already have a record of going for the best talent around them in Italy, such as Miralem Pjanić and Gonzalo Higuaín. The idea of taking their historic rivals’ prized possession will surely be one to consider.
Many of Juventus’ stars are in the twilight of their careers. Developing a young core of Donnarumma, Matthijs de Ligt, and Paulo Dybala would be too tough to pass on.
