Middlesbrough boss Jonathan Woodgate has dropped a huge hint that Jonny Howson will sign a new contract.
Jonny Howson Close To Signing New Middlesbrough Deal
Out of Contract
The Boro’ boss has a number of players who have contracts expiring this summer.
One of those with a soon-to-be-expiring contract is Jonny Howson.
The midfielder’s versatility has allowed him to feature in nearly every league game for Boro this season.
Howson, 31, has played in midfield, as a winger and at right-back.
He has also played in central defence following a shortage of natural defensive options.
Speaking to the Northern Echo, Woodgate dropped a not-so-subtle hint that Howson would be signing a deal to remain at The Riverside beyond this summer.
Woodgate said: “Jonny will be here at the end of the season. He’ll be here next season, that’s all I will say.”
The Boro coach remained fairly disciplined in revealing any further details, but the fact he believes the former Leeds United man will stay is good news to Middlesbrough fans.
Howson is one of seven first-team players whose contracts are set to expire in July.
The futures of Dani Ayala, George Friend, Marvin Johnson, Adam Clayton, Ryan Shotton and Rudy Gestede all hang in the balance.
The Boro players all have less than six months left on their contracts and the Middlesbrough bosses will be hopeful of tying them in the near future.
The Reds have already had Hayden Coulson and Djed Spence commit their futures to Middlesbrough; the Boro hierarchy will hope that Howson is the next name to do so.
Woodgate’s side are 18th in the Championship, seven points above the relegation places.
They travel to Brentford on Saturday afternoon before heading to Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night.
