Sheffield United have broken their transfer record once again to sign midfielder Sander Berge. The Norweigan international joins the Blades on a four-and-a-half year deal from Belgian side Genk.
Sheffield United Sign Sander Berge
The Move
Berge will provide some serious competition in the middle of the park for Sheffield United. Both John Fleck and John Lundstram have impressed in their debut seasons in the top flight so will likely keep their positions locked down.
Oliver Norwood has also been a consistent figure for the Blades in their return to the Premier League. However, Berg’s status as one of the top young talents in Europe could see the former Fulham man dropped.
Sky Sports report that Chris Wilder tried to land Berge in the summer when Sheffield United were rebuilding their squad for the top flight. The fee back then was believed to match the then club-record deal they paid for Oli McBurnie.
Career So Far
Berge, 21, started his football career with hometown club Asker, close to the Norweigan capital of Oslo. He made eight appearances for them before being picked up by Valerenga in 2015.
The youngster spent two years with the Oslo-based club, making 36 appearances before moving to Belgian side Genk.
It was here where Berge established himself as a top talent. In his first season, he helped Genk to an impressive Europa League run, which was ended by Celta Vigo in the quarter-finals.
In total, he appeared 72 times for Genk, scoring four goals.
Berge is also a full international for Norway, making 20 appearances for his country.
He made his senior debut in March 2017, coming on for the final 17 minutes in a Euro qualifier against Northern Ireland. His first goal was scored in September 2019 in another Euro qualifier, this time against Malta.
