Mansfield Town have confirmed that they have signed defender Kelland Watts from Newcastle United on a four-month loan deal.
Mansfield Confirm the Signing of Kelland Watts
Second Loan Spell Of The Season
Mansfield is Watts’ second loan of the season, having spent the first half of the season with fellow League Two side Stevenage.
It was the 20-year-old’s first loan of his career, having been a regular for Newcastle United’s U23 side; last season saw him appear 41 times for the young Magpies side.
During his time at Broadhall Way, he made 20 appearances. However, he was recalled by Newcastle at the start of the transfer window.
What Was Said
Speaking about Kelland Watts to the official Mansfield Town website, Stags boss Graham Coughlan said: “Kelland is a player who can play in numerous positions. He can play centre-half in a two or a three, he can sit in front [of the defence] or he can go in at left-back.
“He is technically very good. He’s big, strong and suits the division. I would say his best position is centre-half, but if he needs to, he’s comfortable in front of the back four.
“He knows what the division is about and he’s young, fit and hungry. He has a desire, work rate and attitude, which is exactly what we’re looking to build here at this football club.”
Mansfield Town are currently 18th place in League Two, having collected 30 points from 29 games.
Since he took over in December, the Stags having struggled under new manager Coughlan, winning just two games.
However, the latest of those two wins came in their last game, a 3-2 win over Bradford City. As a result, Coughlan will be hoping that his side can begin a good run of form, starting in their next game away to Oldham Athletic.
