Manchester United are set to release midfielder Nemanja Matic at the end of the season when his contract expires. The Serbian has only appeared sporadically this season and it is expected that he will depart in the summer. According to Mail Online’s Jack Kinnersley, Atletico Madrid is a possible destination.
Manchester United to Release Nemanja Matic at End of Season
Starting as a Regular
When Manchester United signed Nemanja Matic in the summer of 2017, it seemed that they had finally returned to the top. Former England striker Ian Wright said that Chelsea selling the Serb to United had handed them “the final piece of the jigsaw”.
Something was certainly going right for them at the beginning of the 17/18 season, as they went eight games unbeaten, scoring 21 goals in the process.
Matic was a regular in his first season in Manchester, however, since then, he has fallen out of favour.
The former Chelsea midfielder has just three appearances this season and got little game-time towards the end of last season. His age caused him to further slow down. With pace being one of the most necessary assets in the Premier League, he became quite droppable.
Furthermore, Scott McTominay has recently emerged as a starting player, pushing Matic further down the pecking order. This has helped with the decision of Manchester United to release Nemanja Matic.
Out of Contract
Matic signed for United on a three-year deal, with an option for them to extend for an extra year. This, however, is not going to happen. According to the Express, Manchester United have decided not to renew the Serbian’s contract, which will expire in June 2020. This comes after Manchester United manager Solskjaer has renewed the contracts of midfielders Andreas Pereira, Juan Mata and Scott McTominay.
