Jose Mourinho today held his first press conference as Tottenham Hotspur manager, claiming that his new side can lift the Premier League title next season. The bold statement comes just two days after the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.
The Portuguese was quick to eliminate any kind of title challenge this season, with his new side languishing in 14th and already a hefty 20 points behind league leaders Liverpool. Mourinho, however, has remained positive that Spurs will be title contenders in the near future.

Mourinho’s Title Ambitions
Jose Mourinho was quick to express his excitement at the prospect of managing Tottenham and hinted that turning the club’s fortunes around wouldn’t be an issue.
“I wouldn’t say it’s a [big] job [to turn things around]. The club is huge. I know that I have potentially a great job in my hands.
The potential of the club is huge. The potential of the players is great.”
The Portuguese then went on to confidently say: “We can’t win the Premier League this season. Next season, I’m not saying we will win it, but we can win it.”
The Current Squad and Potential Transfers
Box-office managers usually tend to boast hefty spending fees wherever they ply their trade, and Jose Mourinho certainly expresses that, but he has hinted that the cheque book will stay closed for now.
He said: “The best gift are the players who are here. I don’t need new players. I just need to get to know these ones better. I know them well but you never know them well enough until you meet them.
“I told the players I came here because of them. I tried to buy some for different clubs and some I didn’t even try because you know how difficult it was.”

The London Stadium will set the backdrop for Jose Mourinho’s return to Premier League management, as Spurs travel to rivals West Ham United for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off. Mourinho will be hoping to turn around his new side’s wretched away form, by looking to secure Tottenham a first away win of the season. The hosts, however, will be looking to spoil Mourinho’s welcome-back party, but do still face managerial uncertainties of their own, with Manuel Pellegrini‘s position currently under heavy fire after a series of poor results.
