Arsenal reportedly have a new obstacle to overcome as star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has elected to postpone discussions of a new contract with the club. The Gabon international was linked with a move away from the Emirates this past summer and this news fuels speculation over his future at Arsenal.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ‘Postpones’ Contract Talks
Key Figure
The 30-year-old striker is a key player for the club, both on and off the pitch. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang now serves as club captain after the incident involving Granit Xhaka. He is also a very popular figure in the dressing room.
That is not to mention his prolific scoring record at Arsenal. Aubameyang has nine goals across all competitions this season and 40 in the Premier League through 61 career matches.
While the club does have Alexandre Lacazette, a class player in the same position, losing Aubameyang would leave a huge hole at the club. However, according to Le10Sport, that is exactly what may happen.
Not Happy With Direction
The report claims that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is not happy with the club’s direction under Unai Emery. The Arsenal head coach has managed to win just once in seven games since the beginning of November.
Not only is the club not getting the results they desire, the performances have been average at best. Arsenal can’t keep a clean sheet at the moment and they aren’t creating enough chances on offence.
It is only thanks to the quality of Aubameyang and Lacazette that the Gunners aren’t further adrift in the Premier League. Due to his stature at the club, Arsenal are keen to extend his stay beyond the 18 months left on his current contract.
However, this desire will fall on deaf ears according to the report as the player is not ready to commit his future to the north London outfit. Arsenal are reportedly preparing a new deal worth £250,000 per week which would make him their second-highest earner.
They will hope that such a figure will convince Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to extend his stay at the club. Barcelona were among a number of clubs who registered interest in the player over the summer and may find this latest information very interesting.
Other suitors included various Chinese clubs who could offer huge salaries.
