Oxford United Search for First League Win in Six

Oxford United Win

Oxford United will be looking for their first league win in six games as the U’s welcome newly-promoted Tranmere Rovers to the Kassam Stadium.

Both sides are level on points with just one win this season, but the U’s have lost four of their last five games, drawing the other with Coventry City.

U’s Looking for Second Win of the Season

Following defeat at Fleetwood Town last time out, Oxford are currently on a five-game winless run, with four of those games ending in defeat.

The U’s made a promising start to the season, picking up a point at Sunderland before their only league win so far at home to Peterborough United.

And Karl Robinson’s side are comfortable in the cups, progressing to the third round of the Carabao Cup with wins over Peterborough and Millwall respectively.

But it’s the league form that’s dipped, and this weekend they face a side in a similar position. Tranmere also sit on five points with just one win from their opening six games but have played a game less than Robinson’s side.

Previous Meetings and Key Players

These sides haven’t met since they faced each other in League Two during the 2014/15 season, with Oxford winning both games. The sides also met in the second round of the FA Cup of the same season and, after a 2-2 draw at the Kassam Stadium, Rovers won the replay 2-1.

Prior to that, you’d have to go back twenty years when the two sides were in the old English Division One, where Tranmere beat and drew with Oxford during that campaign.

The U’s welcome back Ben Woodburn who has been away with Wales on international duty, and despite not playing in either games, the 19-year-old will be a welcome addition.

Mark Sykes, who was also away with Northern Ireland, has also returned but is less likely to feature. John Mousinho could return to a back four that is currently leaking goals.

Micky Mellon has played a relatively consistent team during this campaign. Defender Manny Monthe has played seven times, assisting three goals, while Ollie Banks has one goal and one assist from midfield.

Stefan Payne and Morgan Ferrier both have two goals from five outings, but the latter is out injured, while Connor Jennings has three from seven.
